Bush plans laid bare -- war, anywhere

Chuck Hagel reveals that the Bush cabal wanted the 2002 Iraqi war resolution to cover the entire Middle East:

It’s incredible that you had to ask for that.
It is incredible. That’s what I said to Andy Card. Said it to Powell, said it to Rice. Might have even said it to the president. And finally, begrudgingly, they sent over a resolution for Congress to approve. Well, it was astounding. It said they could go anywhere in the region.

It wasn’t specific to Iraq?
Oh no. It said the whole region! They could go into Greece or anywhere. I mean, is Central Asia in the region? I suppose! Sure as hell it was clear they meant the whole Middle East. It was anything they wanted. It was literally anything. No boundaries. No restrictions.

They expected Congress to let them start a war anywhere they wanted in the Middle East?
Yes. Yes. Wide open. We had to rewrite it. Joe Biden, Dick Lugar, and I stripped the language that the White House had set up, and put our language in it.

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrived in Israel on Saturday in an uphill bid to revive stalled peace talks after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a defiant appeal for acceptance of his pact with Hamas.

"This (unity government) agreement was the best we could get. We cannot change it. You either take it or leave it," a Palestinian official said of Abbas's message to Assistant U.S. Secretary of State David Welch during preparatory talks in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

After a surprise trip to Iraq, Rice will meet Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni in Jerusalem on Saturday night. She will hold separate talks with Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday, laying the groundwork for a three-way summit in Jerusalem on Monday.

The summit was overshadowed by the threat of an American and Israeli boycott of the power-sharing government between Abbas's Fatah and Hamas Islamists.

Professor

The discourse between Republicans and Democrats is almost laughable now. I have totally given up on them. If I didn't know better I would say we are on a one way train headed straight for the last days mardi gras. But I wont.

I know you posted about the Aya tea a while ago. I have a friend that just came back from Peru with some interesting comments about the experience. Thought you might enjoy reading it.My site has the link.
Peace.
